Montessori Elementary Program
We have lovingly and painstakingly put together our environment from scratch and we hope that both children and adults will find it a joy to be here, a home away from home.
We are pleased to offer the Montessori Elementary Program from 7 to 12 years of age.
Since it has been seen to be necessary to give so much to the child, let us give him a vision of the whole universe.
In the most simple words, it is an approach to education that helps children be aware that everything in the universe is connected and interdependent. Children are then able to see themselves as connected beings, working towards a successful and peaceful world. It starts with the 5 great stories which give a brief yet stunning overview of the universe, life, humans, language and numbers. The children have this big picture and everything they now learn is connected to these great stories.
Studies of History, Geography, Biology, Geometry, Language, Mathematics, Art and Music are done by the children with the key lessons given by the guides and activity followed by children. Details of each area of study can be found in the ME1-6 pages. There is no rigid schedule or curriculum that the whole class must follow together and so the children can focus intensely on their self-chosen work, with least interruption.
They also collaborate with the guide to make sure that their work is appropriately challenging and purposeful as well as meeting the basic standards of their country. Children own every piece of work and learning that occurs and thus feel a great love of it. The guide ensures that children do the minimum scope of work but the children are in charge of the maximum! The children now know how to think and learn without limits.
The Role of the Guide
The vision of the teacher should be at once precise like that of the scientist, and spiritual like that of the saint. The preparation for science and the preparation for sanctity should form a new soul, for the attitude of the teacher should be at once positive, scientific and spiritual.
A guide in a Montessori environment has utmost conviction in the self-construction of the children. This means that she knows and believes with all her heart that children are capable of constructing themselves and self-perfecting themselves to their highest potential.
The guide is the most important link between the children and their development.
The guides are all-rounders who have the skills to inspire learning in every area including Art and Music. Specialists or experts are only sought out to fine-tune the children’s work while the guides take the role of instilling interest, love and passion for work in all areas.
The guides ask the right questions instead of giving answers thus encouraging children to find the answers themselves.
The guide should be the animating spirit of the class which awakens interest through teaching and gives it direction. Then comes free choice and repetition of the exercise. The secret is always to present these things in the most interesting way possible and then allow free choice when the child has understood.
You are a product of your environment. So choose the environment that will best develop you toward your objective. Analyse your life in terms of its environment. Are the things around you helping you toward success – or are they holding you back?
W. Clement Stone
The environment of the 6-12 age group focuses on moral and intellectual independence, social and cultural understanding, added sense of responsibility and development of imagination. It mimics a community of workers of different ages all having varying needs though all sharing the same characteristics. The environment has everything needed for their self-construction.
The characteristics of the children in this age group demand challenging mental work, complex order, moral ideas, opportunities of using their imagination, group work, hero worship and ways to be responsible.
